NextGIS Web support for external S3-compatible storages

Working with raster data is becoming increasingly resource-intensive. The volume of satellite and aerial imagery continues to grow, along with new data sources and use cases. As a result, organizations need faster access and more flexible storage approaches.

A common solution is to keep large raster datasets in external S3-compatible storage, while connecting them to GIS systems on demand.

NextGIS Web now supports this workflow natively.

S3-based raster storage in NextGIS Web

NextGIS Web introduces a new resource type: S3-based raster storage. It allows you to connect external S3 buckets and use their contents directly in your Web GIS, as well as store new rasters in the same storage.

This means you can both read and write raster data without moving it into the internal storage of NextGIS Web.

Why use external S3 storage?

Reduced server load
Large raster datasets remain outside the NextGIS Web instance and do not consume local storage.

Infrastructure flexibility
You can use any S3-compatible solution, including AWS S3, MinIO, or others.

On-demand access
Raster data is accessed when needed, without preloading entire datasets.

How it works

To create an S3 raster storage resource, specify:

  • S3 endpoint (server address)
  • Bucket name
  • Access key
  • Secret key
  • Optional prefix

Once configured, you can:

  • connect existing rasters stored in S3
  • upload new rasters directly from the NextGIS Web interface
  • use these rasters in web maps, styles, and services

Coordinate system support

Raster data stored in S3 can use any coordinate reference system. NextGIS Web supports custom CRS definitions, ensuring correct rendering and processing.

This makes the approach suitable for a wide range of applications, including cadastral systems, environmental monitoring, and scientific workflows.

Summary

S3-based raster storage in NextGIS Web provides a practical way to:

  • connect external raster data
  • reduce infrastructure costs
  • scale storage independently
  • work efficiently with large datasets

If you already use S3-compatible storage, integration with NextGIS Web is straightforward and requires minimal setup.
