Add Coordinates to Images Using Track

Add GPS coordinates to the EXIF tags of your images using a GPX track and the NextGIS Toolbox tool, “Add coordinates to images using track”.

If you’re recording a track while taking photos, this tool allows you to match the images with track points on the map. The matching process is based on timestamps.

Workflow

  1. You move through an area and record your route on one device (smartphone, GPS navigator).
  2. On another device (camera, another smartphone), you take photos.
  3. The photos either lack location data or have incorrect location data.
  4. Upload the GPX track and photos to the tool. As output, you get the same photos, but with accurate coordinates based on the GPX track data.

Preparing the Data

You’ll need:

  • A GPX track file
  • Photos without coordinates or with incorrect coordinates
Input data

Place your photos in a ZIP archive before uploading them to the tool.

Running the Tool

  1. Open the “Add coordinates to images using track” tool.
  2. Upload the GPX track and the ZIP file with your photos.
  3. Start the tool, wait for it to complete, and download the resulting file.
Run the Tool

Results

Once you check the EXIF properties of the updated photos, you’ll notice that coordinates have been added in the GPS section.

Why is this useful?

  1. Some modern mobile devices automatically embed geolocation data in your photos, allowing users to create a “memory map” or “travel map”.
  2. We offer another tool that can generate a vector point layer based on your geotagged photos. This can be useful for creating research, technical, or hobbyist maps.
